(A jungle. Sona is playing with other animals.)

All animals: Sona, you are very ugly and unclean because you are black!

[Sona feels very sorry and goes to his mother]

SCENE II
(Other part of jungle)

Sona:       Mother, Am I black? I take my bath everyday. I use powder and cream.
But my friends say that  I am not clean, because I am black.

Mother:  Son, what is wrong, if you are black? You are very nice and your behaviours are good. Nobody is    bad if he is black.

Sona:     No, mother. I don’t agree. You are telling a lie. If I am good, then why are my friends teasing me? [Sona starts crying]
What do I do now? Nobody will play with me. How do I become fair? Is anybody exchanging his colour with me? [He thinks] If some of my friends give me some colours to me, I become beautiful.

[Sona goes to his friends in the jungle. He sees his friend Chiku  playing on the grass. Sona goes to him]

Sona:      Good morning, Chiku! How are you?

Hare:      Good morning, I am fine. How do you come here?

Sona:    Everybody says that I am not beautiful, because I am black. Would you kindly give some of    your colour to me, so that I may look nice?

Hare:      Yes, yes, certainly! Take it.

[Chiku gives some colours to Sona. Now Sona has some white patches  on his skin]

Sona:     Thank you very much. OK, I am going now.

[Sona goes on. He meets his friend Totaram on a branch of a tree nearby. He goes and sits under the tree]

Sona:      Good morning, Totaram!

Totaram: Good morning Sona! How are you?

Sona:     Totaram, you are the most beautiful among the birds. Nobody has such a nice colour like you. Crow is black and some others are gray. But your colour is so bright and vibrant. Your body is green and beaks are red. Oh! What a beautiful colour. See, I am so black. Would you kindly give me some of your green colour to me, so that I also look beautiful?

Totaram: Yes, yes, certainly. Take this.

[Totaram gives some colours to Sona. Now Sona has some green patches on his body]

Sona:     Thank you very much.

[Sona now meets Munna. But he is running. Sona stops him and asks]

Sona:    What happened to you Munna? Why you are running so fast? Is everything OK?

Munna: I saw a hunter in the morning. We are scared of the hunters. They kill us; take our skin and horn and sell into the market. They get a lot of price for these.

Sona:   They don’t even spare us. They also catch us with a trick, take us to the zoo or circus. They keep us in the cage or chain us.

Munna: Now tell me, what brought to you here?

Sona:   I came here to ask you whether you would give me some of your skin colours. I want to look beautiful by taking some colours from my friends.

Munna: Certainly, Take some of my spots. Hope you will look beautiful with some spots on your body!

[Munna gives some spots to Sona. Now he has a spotted body. Sona thinks himself]

Sona:     I think I am looking very beautiful now. But I should add some orange colour to get a bright  shade. Let me go and meet Monu.

[Sona goes near a pond, where Monu is practising swimming]

Sona:     Good morning Monu. You are looking so fresh and happy. After the rainy season, your pond is full of water now. I hope, you are getting enough food now.

Monu:    Oh, yes. We all are very happy now.

Sona:      Look at me, Monu. See the beautiful colours of my body. Everybody calls me black, so I have taken some colours from my friends. Now I need some orange colour. If you give some orange colour from your beak, I would be very happy. Would you fulfill my wish?

Monu:    Oh, certainly. You take as much orange colour from my beak as you wish.

Sona:      Thank you, Monu. I will come in the evening to play with you. Bye, bye.

SCENE III
[Sona is very happy now and comes back to his house. His mother is standing on the door]

Sona:       Mummy, look at me. See, how pretty I am now. All of my friends have given me their colours.

Mother:    Sona, Have you seen your colours? You go to the river and see your body first. If you think you are looking beautiful, then come back to me. Otherwise, take a bath and come.

[Sona goes to the river. When he sees himself in the water, he cannot recognise himself.]

Sona:       Who is this? Is it me? Oh, I am looking so awful with so many colours. [He starts crying] What  shall I do now? How do I get rid of these colours? Oh God, please give me back my own colour. [Stops and thinks] Mummy told me if I don’t like my colours, I should take bath.

[Sona takes bath. Coming out from water, he watches his reflection on the water. All the colours have gone.]

Sona:     Oh! I am feeling so light. Mummy told the right thing. Everybody should be happy with his own Colour! I would never mind what others say. Let me go and play with my friends.
